Historical Tree

Over the past 150 years, this tree has stood strong and proud in the North Fork Valley. As we dig into the history of its roots; we find out how powerful and influential one seemingly common entity can be.

The story starts at the corner of Highway 92 and 3000 Rd in Hotchkiss, CO. Our own Helen from Rescue Tree Service, sat down with the Owners Deon, and Dixie Luke, along with the Hotchkiss Historical Society to collect additional information regarding this massive Cottonwood. Mr. and Mrs. Luke have entertained us with copious amounts of stories from the past. Many locals have their own stories of this tree, recalling their memories of this wonderful landmark.

The water from Big Gulch, is one of the main sources to the tree, which is why it has become the spectacle it is today that many have grown to love and cherish throughout the years.

In the early days of Horse and buggy this was an ideal stopping point.  It was the perfect watering hole for the horses and provided shade to the travelers, traveling to Hotchkiss from Delta, which at that time was a long trip.  While standing near the tree you have magnificent views of the Scenic Mesa and beyond.

Sharon Colton, former teacher at Hotchkiss Elementary loved this tree so much, her dying wish was to have her ashes be spread underneath her favorite tree in the valley.

More to this story, coming soon.
